CHAPTER FIFTEEN
âRight, run it by me one more time.â Wilsonâs voice cut through her thoughts.
Claire ignored the feeling that Wilson was sounding more exasperated the more she tried to explain her new plan of action. She could hardly blame him. She would feel the same. She knew he had no family, and as far as she knew, there was no one waiting for him to come back with welcoming arms and a warm bed. But it was still late, and it had been one hell of a long day.
But she also knew Wilson was every bit as keen to crack this case, to catch this monster, as she was. And at this moment in time, neither of them had a better plan of attack than the half-formed one she was still trying to get her head around.
It was almost ten and the precinct was practically deserted. Claire sat down at her desk, rubbing her eyes. She stretched and turned on her laptop. She could hear Wilson doing the same a couple of desks down.
The adrenaline rush of earlier had dissipated. The eagerness and excitement that she may have found a new crack in which to destroy the hitherto impenetrable shell the serial killer had managed to construct around himself had once again been replaced by the nagging doubt that she was going out on a limb. Way too far out. With no safety net and against all logic and reason.
That last vision, the burned face. It was the face of the monster who was doing this. The face of the person who had ended those three womenâs lives. She knew it. She had no idea how, but at this moment, that wasnât the important thing. She had seen the face of the person they were after. Was the mask of any relevance though? Was that another crucial clue that she was ignoring by stumbling after the seemingly more important, or at least more obvious one?
And how could she be so certain? The blindfold, that first terrible vision had proved correct. That had got her to where they were today. But the others? They had just led them down blind alleys and false trails. Why was this different? And how could she use the knowledge she had to get them going in the right direction?
Again, all these questions. So few answers.
âWe need to search for arsonists and burn victims who lived in a twenty-mile radius of where these killings have taken place and who never left the town.â
She rubbed her eyes with the palms of her hands.
âHe is from here Wilson. I know it. He belongs here. Heâs been here all along. These crimes have been committed by someone who knows this town, knows its people. Its secrets. We've been missing the connection between the victims and the killer because we've been looking for the obvious. These were women who lived in the same town. They went to the same schools. The fact that the killer was able to get hold of them and kill them so easily was all part of his plan.
